Are You Ready...

Next to time, our health is our most valuable resource! Why then are so many people unhealthy? Why are obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease climbing at exponential rates?

...To Be Healthier?

For most of us, health and wellness are much easier to work toward and achieve than you may think. Even better, it doesn’t matter how old you are, what your socioeconomic status is, or what your history is!

Let's Do This!

No matter where you are in your journey, there simply is no better time to start getting healthier than today! Welcome aboard!

“Wellness Encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit.

Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.”

Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu

What if someone handed you more money than you could count? It might be challenging to enjoy your new found freedom if you were grossly overweight, and clinically diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease. Our ultimate goal should be to feel good on all fronts: spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically. In order to achieve that, we may need to alter our lifestyles and learn to eat in a healthier way, exercise every day, develop our minds, understand our emotions, strengthen our immune system and expand our spiritual horizons.

These are not as challenging as they may seem. Almost every habit we’ve developed over the years is simply a pattern that can be modified or replaced. We can develop better eating habits by eating five or six smaller meals per day instead of the traditional three large meals. We can drink more water, and expose ourselves to less toxic chemicals. We can limit our diet of bad news and replace it with time spent in nature, good music, and meditation. We can build our strength, learn to focus, and walk away from hectic or unnerving activities. Just like we choose anything else, we can choose to be healthy, well and strong.

Total wellness encompasses both internal (body, soul and spirit) and external (nutrition, environment, community, finances and vocation components. The ultimate goal of total wellness for all of us is good choices, balance and focus, optimum performance, and positive energy in the following eight areas:

Body: physical health of bodily systems (circulatory, nervous, skeletal, reproductive, immune, respiratory, endocrine, lymphatic, muscular, digestive, urinary, excretory) and five senses,

Soul: mental and emotional health of the invisible you (mind, will, emotions, attitudes),

Spirit: the eternal you (conscience/sub-conscious mind, heart, beliefs, feelings), balance, and life purpose,

Nutrition: what you eat and drink,

Environment: where you live, work, play, visit, learn, and relax,

Community: your family, friends, peers, and acquaintances,

Finances: having abundant income, savings, philanthropy, debt reduction, investing, and retirement planning,

Vocation: satisfying work, and enjoyable activities.

We all want to feel good every day and live a long and healthy life. This is certainly possible by being pro-active with what we eat, what we do, what we think, and what we expose ourselves to. Every small step in the right direction is a positive action and movement towards total wellness, and the goals of feeling great about ourselves, life, and the reality that we live in every single day. Good health in all realms is no accident; the more we know, the better our defense, as well as offence, can be. And the healthier we are, the happier and more fulfilling our lives will be.

What’s Better Than Your IQ?

The definition of IQ is “Intelligence Quotient.” I.Q. is a number meant to measure people’s cognitive abilities (intelligence) in relation to their age group. An I.Q between 90 and 110 is considered average; over 120, superior. Roughly 68% of the...

Which is Easier – Losing Weight or Saving Money?

One of the challenges I had to conquer early in my college teaching career was finding ways to stir up curiosity in my students. If my students weren’t curious, or at least slightly interested in what I was about to teach, they would quickly find other things to...

Why Do We Get Fat?

If ever there was a question which multitudes would like a simple answer to, here it is: “Why do we get fat?” Undoubtedly, if we knew the answer to that question, we could solve what has become a national epidemic of obesity, fad-diet insanity, self-esteem...

Want To Be Happier?

It always amazes me to watch children cry. They don’t have a job, a house to keep up, a car to take care of, a lawn to mow, cranky people to work with, stress, or any bills, yet they cry like the sky has fallen on them. Really? I sometimes wish I could tell them...

The Pie of Long Life

Did you know that as soon as you think about eating, even before you see or smell food, your body begins secreting the hormone insulin? And did you know that you need insulin (which your pancreas makes) to “unlock or open the doors” to your body’s 30...

Sex

Have you noticed there just aren’t too many words that will grab our attention as quickly as the words “rich,” “free,” or “sex?” In fact, almost any written, audible, visual or physical reference or hint of sex grabs our...

But I Digress, I mean Digest…

Every once in a while I come across the phrase “but I digress,” which as it turns out, is just a nicer way of saying, “Gosh I strayed off topic; where was I?” Sometimes it’s entertaining, but usually it’s license for the writer to...

Did You Do That on Purpose?

I was born in the “Region,” a name given to the corner of northwest Indiana, just a stone’s throw from Chicago, where all the steel mills along Lake Michigan are located. I had a mostly normal childhood, certainly fraught with the usual trials and...

A Nail in the Coffin of Obesity

I really can’t remember where I was recently, but wherever it was there were plenty of normal, average people all over the place. Now that I think about it, I guess it was a store or a mall, because people were walking around rather than sitting. Maybe it was...

The Truth About Self-Esteem

Have you ever wondered who the person is that invented or discovered words? How cool would that job be! Except of course for the fact that millions of people would probably like to smack you upside your head for coming up with some seriously bizarre stuff. Like for...
